A brief history of the Kingston SE Branch of the National Trust.
The Kingston Branch of The National Trust was formed when a few residents became concerned about the fact that much of our early history and buildings were being lost without sufficient details and photos being recorded for future reference.
In 1964 a group of long term residents of Kingston SE created the local branch of the National Trust with the blessing of the Australian National Trust. Our branch has been in existance since that time and funds for important projects can be sourced from the parent body upon submitting detailed information to qualify for a grant.
A recent project was the transferring of thousands of photos into digital format and saving them onto CD's which can be displayed on a personal computer without any damage to the originals. Once again a grant was received for this worthy project.
Another common function of the branch is helping people investigating their ancestors' history in our district which in return helps us find more and more pieces of our past and to record such information for further reference.
MEETINGS.
Meetings are held in the museum building at 23 Cooke Street every fourth Thursday at 7:30PM in the winter and at 8:00PM from November through the summer months. All members of the general public are most welcome to come along and join in the friendly group discussions. All of our National Trust items that are open to the general public are staffed by volunteers from our local community and if you would like to be involved we will make you very welcome. We have held special events as well on occasions when we have been able to have guest speakers or slides of interest to our group. These events are usually advertised and are very well attended and are usually held on a Sunday afternoon to be more accessable for the elderly citizens of our community.
NATIONAL TRUST ITEMS in KINGSTON SE.
There are two main items under the care and control of the Kingston Branch of the National Trust and conducted tours are available during the busy times such as school holidays and Easter and Christmas. The first one and indeed the most visable one is the CAPE JAFFA LIGHTHOUSE and the other one is probably the most valuable but often overlooked by most. It is the MUSEUM in Cooke St. and has a wealth of items that tell a complete history of the past of our country and more importantly, our area. Access can also be arranged on request by contacting the Kingston National Trust or the Kingston Caravan Park adjacent to the lighthouse.
Several other items have been classified or endorsed by the National Trust and these items are also well worth the effort to "discover".
Items of interest to, or under the control of, the National Trust.
